USE AN ONLINE PLATFORM THAT INTEGRATES THE WHOLE CAMPAIGN
Campaign Integration in the Cloud: A Must Have in a High-Tech, Interconnected World
If you’ve been involved in campaigns for any length of time, you’ve had to deal with the nightmare of running campaigns by spreadsheet!
Remember the chore of trying to track a hundred and one different spreadsheets for fundraising, volunteer, and voter functions – all being manipulated and edited by different campaign workers! You had a deathly fear of losing your important documents. How do organize all these different spreadsheets on your computer. Maybe you’ve had a computer that crashed and you lost all your data.
From Spreadsheets to Multiple Online Programs
Times have changed, but are you operating at an optimum level? Maybe you’ve taken advantage of the online revolution, but you’re still not operating at peak efficiency. You’re working with 3 or more different online campaign solutions. Your voter file is on one online program – your task management on another. You’ve got good social media platforms developed, but they’re not integrated with all your other campaign functions. When you complete your campaign calls or canvassing programs, you still have to figure out how to get the data from spreadsheets integrated with your voter file.
It’s time for integration – in the cloud! With the development of cloud based campaign programs, these days of confusion and inefficiency are becoming a distant memory.
Guiding Principles for Integration in the Cloud.
1. Voter Data is the Center of the Campaign Universe. As you learn about online campaign platforms, remember that voters and voter files should drive the technical process. During the campaign process you are striving to push and pull voters through the process of apathy to support and active engagement. Your platform should helpful in aggregating data that shows that movement.
2. Strive for efficiency in identification, persuasion and turnout activities. All three of these activities require different programs and tactics. Your online platform should help increase your efficiency with these programs by allowing you to integrate and append data in a voter record real-time. Custom reporting should be used to allow you to drill down for status reports on each of these stages in the voter continuum.
3. Allow for different levels of user participation. As you implement your campaign platform, you will need to create a permission hierarchy for users. You have different levels of campaign staff. Your strategists. Department directors. Mid-level staffers. Volunteers. Their access to confidential voter information and reporting functions should be appropriate to the level of their tasks.
Imagine An Online Platform that Integrates Your Campaign
Voter Contact Management – You will touch each voter many times over the course of the campaign (ie. calls, mail, canvassing, social media, etc). As much as possible, your platform needs to document those interactions real-time and seamlessly. All this is possible now by using, for example, mobile canvassing and VOIP phone apps. This technology integration allows you to track voters movements as you move them along the engagement pathway.
Process and Task Management – There are a lot of great project management tools out in the cloud. When it comes to your platform, there are probably built in project management features, but some platforms – through API technology – allow you to “plugin” your existing PM programs into the platform. Assigning tasks, setting deadline and reporting functions are all part of good execution. Your platform should help you increase the campaign’s efficient by integrating project management features with all your campaign functions.
Donor Management – There are a lot of expensive and fancy fundraising programs on the market, but how nice would it be to have all the information on your donors integrated into your voter platform? Whether you need information for campaign finance reports OR fundraising functions, an online platform allows you to seamlessly integrate this into your campaign activities.
Staff and Volunteer Management – You now have the ability to integrate your staff and volunteers into your platform. No more chasing down volunteer lists or staff phone numbers. All that information is on the platform and can be used at a push of a button.
Online Engagement – Your campaign should engage in online activities. A good online platform allows individual voter records to be linked with social media and email accounts. This linkage opens up a world of opportunities for engaging with individual voters online – AND being able to measure and report that engagement.
GOTV Programs – If you’ve done a good job in identifying your supporters, your online platform should be your biggest friend with early voting and Election Day GOTV activities. With reporting functions, you can generate real-time reports on who needs to be touched with early voting GOTV material. On Election Day, if you’ve set up your poll watcher and GOTV call programs, you’ll have a real-time record of who’s voted so you’re knock and drag teams can focus their time and resources more strategically on Election Day.
Cloud Based Platforms are Revolutionizing Modern Campaigns
The progression in campaigns from spreadsheets to multiple online tools to cloud-based integrated platforms is simplifying and democratizing sophistication in the political process. Fully integrated online platforms are still developing – more sophistication usually requires customization and coding – but the basic online platforms are now within reach of every level of political campaigns. What hasn’t changed, is the requirement to take the time to understand and implement new technology. A fully integrated platform is more than a few clicks of the mouse. I hope this information piques your interest and opens a few doors in discovering how you can fully integrate your campaign with online campaign platforms.
IT’S YOUR TURN
Spend a few minutes and think about how efficient your campaign could be if almost every campaign function were integrated and online. Now schedule a couple of hours and visit the online campaign platform vendor websites listed in the ADDITIONAL RESOURCES below.
